The construction of the European Union began after the end of World War II. Europe was in ruins at the time and everything had to be rebuilt. But above all, a solution had to be found so that Germany and France would come to an agreement again and then arrive at a lasting peace in Europe. It was therefore necessary to imagine a system of relations between the countries which would allow it ... This idea came from the French Jean Monnet, a civil servant and a convinced European. He proposed a construction "in small steps", based on a collaboration between the French and the Germans. His brilliant idea was very simple: Germany and France must jointly produce and market their coal and steel.
